Lying in between Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams is Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Gifford Pinchot was the first head of the US Forest Service, believing that national forests should benefit both business and the public good. Standing opposite him was John Muir, who believed that national forests and natural monuments should be left alone to be enjoyed by the nation in their natural state.
*Offered is two articles discussing the fate of America's forests. Since logging is an important industry in the PNW, this topic is essential for understanding the development of the state.
**Remember, this assignment is OPTIONAL, but a good way to stay connected to the class.
